Which ear problem is it?
Three different problems feel similar from the inside. The otoscope tells them apart — and the treatment is not the same.
Itchy then painful canal, hurts to pull the ear or chew, blocked, sometimes discharge — after water sports
Outer-ear infection (otitis externa). Cleaning + antibiotic/steroid drops. Keep it dry. Usually much better in 2–3 days.
Deep throbbing pain, fever, muffled hearing, often after a cold or flight; common in children
Otitis media. Pain relief, oral antibiotics when indicated, decongestant advice. Flying can be very painful — ask us before you board.
Sudden discharge with pain relief (possible burst eardrum), severe pain with swelling behind the ear, high fever, dizziness, facial weakness, or a child under 2 with ear pain

Recovery plan — and when you can get back in the water
Most ear infections settle fast once the right drops go in. The mistake is getting the ear wet again too soon.
- D0Visit — otoscope exam, ear cleaning, first dose of drops, pain relief plan. We show you how to put the drops in properly (lie on your side, 3–5 minutes).
- D1–3Drops continue — pain should ease within 24–48 hours. Ear stays completely dry: no swimming, surfing or diving; shower with a cotton ball and Vaseline in the ear.
- D3–7Check-in — message from us. If pain or discharge is not clearly better by day 3, we come back and review.
- D7–10Back in the water — usually 7 days after symptoms clear for outer-ear; longer if the eardrum was involved. Use drying drops or a swim cap after surf sessions to prevent repeats.
Treatment is decided by the doctor after examining the ear. Never put drops in an ear that has had a burst eardrum unless the doctor has prescribed them.

Ear infection FAQ
Can I fly with an ear infection?⌄
With an outer-ear infection, usually yes once pain is controlled. With a middle-ear infection or fluid behind the eardrum, flying can be very painful and occasionally damages the eardrum — the doctor checks and advises, and gives a letter if you should delay.
How long until I can surf or swim again?⌄
Typically about 7 days after symptoms clear for swimmer's ear, longer if the eardrum was affected. Getting the ear wet too early is the main cause of relapse.
Do I need antibiotics by mouth?⌄
Not for most outer-ear infections — drops work better. Oral antibiotics are used for middle-ear infections in certain cases, for spreading infection, or in young children. The doctor decides after looking.
My child has ear pain and fever — is it urgent?⌄
Ear infections are very common in children and usually not dangerous, but a child under 2, a very high fever, swelling behind the ear or a very unwell child should be seen the same day. Message us.
Can you remove the blocked wax?⌄
Yes. Water-swollen wax is one of the most common causes of a blocked ear in Bali. We soften and clear it at your room.
Why does my ear keep getting infected on this trip?⌄
Repeated wetting, humidity, cotton buds, or surfer's ear (bone growth narrowing the canal). We treat the current infection and give you a prevention plan — drying drops after every session and no cotton buds.
