Does it need stitches — or just cleaning?
Send a photo and we will tell you honestly. As a rough guide:
Shallow scrape, small cut, edges together, no dirt left inside
Proper cleaning, antibiotic ointment and a dressing. We can still visit if you can't clean it well yourself or it is on a joint.
Road rash with grit, gaping cut, coral cut, wound on hand/face/joint, deep puncture, bleeding that won't stop
Needs irrigation under anaesthetic, stitches or strips, tetanus check. Best within 6–8 hours for stitching.
Red spreading skin, pus, heat, swelling, fever, red streaks up the limb, wound from an animal bite
Infection or rabies risk. Message or call now — infected tropical wounds get worse fast.
Healing plan — what the next two weeks look like
A wound in tropical humidity needs more care than at home. Here is what we do and what you do.
- D0Visit — clean, anaesthetise, close (stitches/strips/glue), tetanus booster if due, first antibiotic dose if the wound is dirty or deep.
- D1–3Keep it dry and covered — waterproof dressing; no pool, sea or scooter dust on the wound. We change the dressing if you can't.
- D4–7Check-in — photo to us. Any redness, pus or pain increasing = we come back the same day.
- D7–14Stitch removal — face 5–7 days, body 7–10, joints 10–14. Done at your hotel; scar care advice given.
Whether to stitch, glue or strip is decided by the doctor after examining the wound. Wounds older than 8–12 hours or from animal bites are usually not stitched closed because of infection risk.

Wound care FAQ
How soon do I need stitches?⌄
Ideally within 6–8 hours of the injury. After 12 hours most wounds are left open and dressed instead because closing them traps bacteria. Send a photo now rather than waiting until morning.
Can I swim or surf with a wound?⌄
Not until it is closed and dry — usually 5–7 days for a stitched wound, longer for road rash. Sea water in Bali carries bacteria that infect wounds quickly; we use waterproof dressings where possible.
Do I need a tetanus shot?⌄
If your last booster was more than 5 years ago (dirty wound) or 10 years ago (clean wound), yes. We bring it and give it during the visit.
Why do coral cuts get so infected?⌄
Tiny coral fragments and marine bacteria stay in the wound. They need scrubbing and irrigation, often antibiotics. Do not just rinse and hope.
Can you do stitch removal if I fly home?⌄
We remove them before you leave if timing allows, or give you a written note of the wound, suture type and removal date for your doctor at home.
What about a scooter exhaust burn?⌄
The "Bali kiss" is a partial-thickness burn. We clean it, apply burn dressing and give pain relief; it needs checking every 2–3 days for infection.
Is it covered by travel insurance?⌄
Scooter and surf injuries are usually covered as emergency treatment (check your policy for scooter licence clauses). We provide an itemised receipt and medical certificate.
